Britta Perry: The Potentially Bi-tastical Rebel of "Community"

Community, the brilliantly flawed masterpiece that's become a cult classic, introduced us to a vibrant ensemble of characters. Among them is one Britta Perry, the self-proclaimed activist with a knack for making well-intentioned blunders. As a non-binary millennial who absolutely adores this show's unique charm, I oft find myself pondering the mysterious possibility of Britta secretly being bisexual.

Community is a hilarious and offbeat TV show that revolves around a diverse group of students attending the fictional Greendale Community College. Led by the witty and self-admittedly "cool" Jeff Winger, the "study group" embarks on wild and often absurd adventures, navigating their way through unique classes, bizarre events, and unforgettable misadventures. Filled with clever humor, pop culture references, and an array of quirky characters, Community takes a comedic approach to exploring friendship, personal growth, and the unconventional dynamics of community college life. It's a must-watch for anyone seeking laughter and unexpected surprises.

Britta Perry, the rebel with an unintentionally hilarious streak, masterfully portrayed by the talented Gillian Jacobs, captures our hearts with her bumbling activism and endearing flaws. While her romantic entanglements primarily involve male characters, peel back the layers and we may find the hidden rainbow within her. Her allure as a potentially bisexual person actually lies in the fluidity of her relationships. As mentioned, while she is predominantly portrayed as having heterosexual relationships, there are instances where her interactions with women are flirtatious enough to suggest an openness to romantic connections across gender lines.

In episode 15 of season 2 of Community, titled "Early 21st Century Romanticism," Britta Perry finds herself in a hilariously awkward situation where she excitedly decides to attend a Valentine’s Day party with a woman named Paige, whom she believes is a lesbian. However, much to Britta's surprise and embarrassment, she eventually discovers that Paige is actually straight. Prior to that realization, however, Britta's well-intentioned assumption about Paige's sexual orientation leads to a series of comical misunderstandings and awkward encounters throughout the party, all of which eventually results in the straightest girl-girl kiss ever seen on national TV.

Let's face it: While this may not be the Holy Grail of examples, I choose to believe that Britta is as fluid as a shape-shifting rainbow unicorn. Sure, her encounters on the show lean toward the heterosexual side, but let's not be so rigid! Sexual orientation is not confined to a checkbox, and Britta's adventures flirt with the idea of romantic connections across the gender spectrum. She's like a bi pride flag in human form, making us question the boundaries of our own perceptions.

Community loves teasing us with subtle clues and uproarious banter, often serving us sly nods that hint at the possible fluidity of not only Britta, but Annie as well. (In that same episode, someone yells "Kiss her!" at Britta and Annie, and Annie leans in to do it without the slightest hesitation, surprising even Britta.) From witty comebacks to cheeky references, the show dances around the topic like a squirrel on caffeine. It's as if they're saying, "Hey, did you notice Britta's bi vibes? Blink twice if you did!" So naturally, we can't help but wonder if Britta's rebellious spirit also extends to her love life.

Britta's fierce support for the LGBTQ+ community is as visible as her hilarious activist blunders. She's all about equality, shouting from the rooftops, or maybe just awkwardly whispering about the need for love and acceptance. Whether joining protests or passionately discussing LGBTQ+ rights, Britta's empathy shines through like a glittery bi-pride beacon. Perhaps her passionate allyship is rooted in a personal connection she's yet to openly express.

Ah, the beauty of imperfection! Community may not be the poster child for flawless representation, but it's like that one quirky friend we love despite their awkward dance moves. The show primarily focuses on heterosexual relationships and occasionally stumbles into tired stereotypes. But fear not, for in this chaotic cosmos, we can still find room for laughter, growth, and more inclusive storytelling. Like, remember Frankie from season six? Her sexual preferences were a question the show asked openly, but also never really answered.

The Bi-tastic Conclusion? Britta Perry's potentially secret bisexuality adds a splash of confetti to her already vibrant character, and while her relationships may predominantly feature male partners on-screen, let's remember that love isn't confined to a single path. Britta's fluidity and her unique way of challenging norms make her a representation of the beautiful messiness that comes with exploring one's own identity.

In this whimsically imperfect world, it's essential to celebrate the diversity of sexual orientations and embrace characters like Britta who challenge the status quo. So, let's raise our rainbow-colored flags high and continue pushing for more nuanced and inclusive representations on television.
